Friends of Moosehorn January 6, 2010 Meeting Minutes
Present: Andy Slater, Bonny Slater, Roland LaVallee, Ray Brown, Fred Hartman, Fred Gralenski, Marcia Carlow Bill Kolodnicki and Scott Frazier
Call to order: FOMR President Andy Slater 6:10 p.m.
Minutes: Roland stated that the minutes of the December 3, 2009 meeting were distributed by email twice. No discrepancies were noted. Motion to accept (Hartman/B.Slater) All in favor.
Treasurers Report: Marcia Carlow provided the friends with an up to date report. Statement as of December 31, 2009 shows… Bangor Savings account $650.51, CD $3,156.07, savings account $11.37, Pay Pal account $99.20, and petty cash –$14.00 for a total of $3,903.15. It was noted that the dramatic change in assets reflected the final payment of the 1,000 DVDs.
Winter Fun Day Event: Scott Frazier event organizer from Washington County Community College informed the board that a state wide Winter Fun Day organized by the State of Maine for their parks was scheduled for the same day. Coobscook Bay State Park would be hosting the event and would not be able to change dates. Scott asked us if we could change our date and the board agreed to change the date from Jan. 23 to Feb.6, 2010 from 9a.m – 3p.m..
Roland, Marcia, Andy and Bonny agreed to volunteer. Any FOMR members are more than welcome to volunteer.
We could use someone to make stew or chowder and drop it off at the event. Expenses of the food will be reimbursed. Email Andy at ttlandy@myfairpoint.net if you can help.
Birding Festival: A meeting was held on Jan. 7th. Things seem to be on track. The refuge will host a raptor program.
Newsletter: Has been mailed. Thank you Emily Martin for your help.
Membership: Roland is ready to get the January 2010 billing done. We have 58 members to date. Addresses have been entered into an Avery label format. Marcia is working on a mailing asking past members to renew again.
Promotion: It was suggested that a FOMR application should be included with each sale of our new DVD.
Events: It was noted our next event is the Winter Fun Day Feb. 6th at the YCC building, next are the amphibian walk and talk in April 24th at 8p.m. at the headquarters building, the warbler walk May 22nd at the eagles nest Rt 1, the spring birding festival starting May 28th and the fishing derby June 19th 10a.m. – 12noon.
DVD: Delivered and sales are brisk. Our cost is $7.57 each. A motion was made that they retail for $15.00 plus Maine sales tax of 5% in state and $3.00 postage and handling. A wholesale price of $10.00 each for merchants with a registered business. A motion was made that FOMR be billed by wholesale merchant before DVDs leave our inventory. (Carlow/LaVallee) All in favor. The refuge will purchase two endless loop DVD players. It was suggested that FOMR purchase some also. No decision was made on this topic.
Merchandise: The prices were reviewed on merchandise and the following were agreed on Retail… Hats $12.50, t shirts $15.00, pins $6.00 and DVDs $15.00…….. Wholesale…. Hats $8.00, t shirts price check needed, pins $4.00 and DVDs $10.00
Bill K. suggested that the volunteer in the refuge’s greeting booth sell our merchandise this summer.
The board discussed making calendars.
Website: Report from Andy stated that the www.friendsofmoosehorn.org website will have the DVD for sale this week.
Trails: Bill K. reported that the Charlotte Trail and the Headquarters Trail is open for skiing as well as the designated snow sled trails. WCCC will be grooming a trail to connect with the refuge.
Grants: Fred Hartman is working with Bangor Savings Bank to get a grant application in for the 2010 grant opportunities.
REFUGE REPORT:
The Treasured Lands Acquisition Project is offering the refuge an opportunity to purchase an additional 75,000 acres.
Winter black duck banding is taking place on the St.Croix and in Edmunds on the salt water.
Andy Weik the refuge biologist took new job with the New York State Ruffed Grouse Society a replacement is being explored.
The refuge is to build a new office administration building. It should be breaking ground in the Fall of 2010.
