Moosehorn meeting Feb. 4, 2009
Present: Clayton Ranney, Roland LaVallee, Bill Kolodnicki, Ron Jenkins, and Beth Clifford
Call to order: 6:10 P.M. by Vice President Ranney.
Minutes: The minutes from the December 2008 meeting were distributed by email. Minutes accepted (LaVallee /Jenkins) All in favor. Note the Jan. 09 meeting was canceled due to a storm.
Treasurers Report: No report was presented this month.
Trails: Bill Kolodnicki reported the refuge has partnered with students from Washington County Community College to groom trails from the college to the Ice House Road.
Membership: The annual membership renewal has yet to be mailed. The latest Timberdoodle Times has been printed. Marcia Carlow needs help from a FOMR member in the Calais area folding and labeling the mailing. If you can help Call her at 454-3966
Events: The Washington County Community College Winter Weekend Saturday the 24th of January was a great success. Five FOMR volunteers helped. Approximately $113.00 in merchandise and donations was realized. Fifty folks registered for the event. Fred G. emailed the board and suggested that such an event be scheduled for the Boy Scouts of America at the refuge.

Merchandise: Roland brought a t-shirt from the order of 50 shirts. Two were sold at the Winter Weekend event. A motion was made to sell the shirts for $15.00 each and $5.00 postage with the 5% sales tax for all Maine sales.
Promotion: Our next event is the amphibian walk/talk in April.
Video: Clayton reported that communication has been good with Gerry. He is coming to have a showing to the board in Feb. Dates are being finalized by Clayton.
National Friends Conference in Washington D.C.: Opportunities still exist to go for any 2 FOMR members to attend. $500 expenses in a grant form is available. A motion was made to cover reasonable expensed incurred by participants if they exceeded the $500 costs. Receipts would be needed for reimbursements. (Clifford/LaVallee) All in favor.
Refuge report:
Bill K. informed the board about:
The refuge this summer will be hiring two biology students, a student as fireman, and also will run the YCC program again this year.
The refuge did not get a grant to buy fish for the fishing derby so they will come up with general budget funding and partner with FOMR were possible.
The 15-year management plan is being slowed by the choice between old growth and woodcock management techniques.

Call to order: 6:10 P.M. by FOMR President Andy Slater.
Minutes: Due to the lack of a quorum at our February 4th meeting three motions made were revisited which included the minutes from the December 2008 regular meeting. Two were voted on again. The minutes from the December 2008 meeting were read and accepted with the header date changed to Dec. 2008. Minutes from the February 2009 meeting also were accepted (Slater/Hartman) All in favor. Note the Jan. 09 meeting was canceled due to a storm.
Motion was made to adopt the t-shirt pricing motion made at the last meeting. (LaVallee/Clifford) To sell the shirts for $15.00 each and $5.00 postage with the 5% sales tax for all Maine sales. All in favor.
A motion was revisited to cover reasonable expensed incurred by participants National Friends Conference in Washington D.C if they exceeded the $500 costs covered by a grant. Receipts would be needed for reimbursements. The date of the conference has past with no representative from FOMR attending, so the issue was not a factor of importance. No action taken. Members who wish to go in 2010 should submit their name to the board at the September annual meeting.
Treasurers Report: Marcia provided a report dated January 20 2009 which showed checking and savings amounts. $2,892.33 Bangor Savings Account, $4,443.64 CD, $80.22 PayPal, -$54.00 Petty Cash, $ 3,948.95 Savings Account for a total $11,311.14. Marcia reported she had filed the FOMR Annual Report to the State.
Trails: Clayton stated that the trails are groomed for skiing every Friday night. Fred Hartman reported that the reprint of the trail map details would be brought to the board for the next meeting.
Membership: The latest Timberdoodle Times has been mailed and the membership application on the back should be used as a bill to pay your 2009 membership. The board needs help from FOMR members to work on a membership drive committee. We have 1 kayak to give as a prize to a new member this year. If you can help call Marcia 454-3966.
Events: Up Coming events are. Audubon sponsored talk by Bill Kolodniki at the Coobcook Learning Center in Whiting April 21st at 7 P.M. (A volunteer member is needed to sell and distribute refuge materials FOMR items Please contact Andy Slater ttandy@myfairpoint.net )
Amphibian Walk/Talk April 25th at 8 P.M. at the refuge.

Merchandise: One hat sold and one t-shirt. Our first online sale was made from merchandise through our www.friendsofmoosehorn.com website.
Promotion: No report.
Video: FOMR members and refuge viewed spring and summer segments of the DVD on February 27th. Several items were brought to Gerry’s attention, but members were happy with the product. Gerry gave us a possible completion date just before the spring birding festival. He would like a public showing during the festival. Clayton set up a phone conference at the March 4th meeting where members asked specific questions. Dates are needed for a final showing.

Friends of Moosehorn September 2nd Annual Meeting Minutes
Call to order: 5 pm….. FOMR President Andy Slater welcomed all and invited all to enjoy the potluck before the meeting business started.
“Take Your Best Shot” photo contest.
Entries were displayed and winners were announced.
1st Place … Peter Brown with an image of a Mourning cloak butterfly, he received a $150.00 gift certificate from Johnson’s Hardware.
2nd place …. Lea Leady with an image of Barn swallows nesting, she received a $75.00 gift certificate from Johnson’s Hardware.
3rd Place… Cara Sileo with an image of a cow moose, she received a $50.00 gift certificate from Johnson’s Hardware.
Honorable Mention 1st…. Stacey Hunter with an image of an immature Bald eagle, she won a Moosehorn Refuge t-shirt.
Honorable mention 2nd……. Hailey Bell with an image of a sandpiper, she won a backpack.
It was noted that this years contest rule change of only 2 images per contestant made the job of judging and hanging more manageable. The Calais Advertiser reporter shot photos of some of the winning contestants. Winning images will be featured on our www.freindsofmoosehorn.org website. It was discussed that next years deadline should be on a Monday.
President Andy Slater thanked FOMR members and reviewed the events of the past year.
Election of Officers:
The slate of officers will be the same for the 2009/10 year.
A motion was made by Fred Hartman nominating the current officers to the same position for the upcoming year along with any board member who wish to continue there service. Clayton Ranney seconded the motion. Vote yielded an all in favor.

New Membership Kayak Raffle was drawn and the winner was Stacy LaBare from Princeton, Maine. The Kayak was donated by Old Town Canoe to help FOMR boost membership.
Fred Gralenski has a Boy Scout Camporee at the refuge based at the YCC building on Sept. 19 and 20. He is looking for some FOMR help to mind the store or help with events. Volunteers can contact Fred by email gralf1@wildblue.net or by phone

Stacey LaBare reported that the American Hiking Society would be doing trail work on the refuge the week of September 20th any FOMR members can help by contacting the refuge. An appreciation dinner will be held at the end of the week. FOMR members are welcome.
REFUGE REPORT: Bill Kolodnicki reported the refuge had 4 new community volunteers who agreed to staff the new welcome/information booth on Headquarters Road.
NEXT MEETING: October 7th 5:00 pm at the YCC building. This is one hour early to review the video for the final time. If this date does not work with the filmmaker the regular meeting will start at 5:00pm

Friends of Moosehorn October 7, 2009 Meeting Minutes
Present: Marcia Carlow, Dan Carlow, Patty Hartman, Gerry Krausse, Sylvia Krausse, Bill Kolodnicki, Ray Brown, Fred Hartman, Bonny Slater, Andy Slater, and Roland LaVallee
5:15 P.M. Gerry Krausse showed the Friends the completed 45-minute DVD of the Moosehorn Refuge. Minor changes would be possible before it is finished. Gerry stated that the FOMR could expect delivery by November. The cover design is being worked on now. A motion was made that FOMR sign off on the approval of the DVD and it be copied after minor changes were made if possible. (M.Carlow/B.Slater) All in favor.

Treasurers Report: Marcia Carlow reported that she has not obtained bank statements since the end of July. She will work to provide the friends with an up to date report for the November meeting. Statement as of July 31, 2009 shows… Bangor Savings account $2497.22, CD $ 4577.51, Pay Pal $89.20, $ -14.00 petty cash, savings account $ 3959.83 for a total of $11,118.76.
Membership: Marcia provided Roland with a current email list of members. She reported six new members.
Promotion: No Report.
Merchandise: We are ready to order more hat inventory. The FOMR were ordering 50 hats and Bill K. wants another 50 for refuge gifts. Andy will check a Calais provider to see if the style FOMR desires is available.
Events: Fall foliage auto tour is in progress.
Our Next major event is the Winter Festival in conjunction with WCCC.
A track meet for elementary school children will be held at the headquarters on October 14th at 2:30 p.m. It should have about 300 people and any FOMR volunteer who wish to show up would be appreciated.

Trails: Bill K. reported the American Hiking Society members did work on the Bearse Lake Bridge, Hanson, Crane brook, Cranberry, Hobart Bog Trails and also did work at Devils Head and the St.Croix Island orchard.
The Refuge provided an appreciation dinner for the workers.
Stacy LaBare has applied for AHS members to return to the refuge next September.
Birding Festival: Fred Hartman showed concern about the refuge partnering with Cobscook Learning Center in May of 2010. Lack of communication between the refuge and the festival organizers has prompted a letter being drafted and sent to CLC and inviting the organizer to our November meeting.
Grants: Fred H. asked the members present if he should approach the Bangor Savings Bank for a grant this year.
Members were in favor.
REFUGE REPORT: Bill K. reported that it has been a busy summer with organizations such as the Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, St. Jude Horseback Riding Club, and the Mid-coast Bird Dog Field Trials using the refuge. He stated that the WCCC heavy machinery students did a fine job on the roadwork they did. He also stated that the 2010 Refuge budget could show a 2 – 4% increase. Five community volunteer greeters have been working on the weekends.

Moosehorn November 3, 2009 Meeting Minutes
Present: Marcia Carlow, Bill Kolodnicki, Fred Hartman, Fred Gralenski, Andy Slater, Roland LaVallee, and guest Kara McCrimmon
Call to order: FOMR President Andy Slater 6:00 p.m. With regret Andy informed the Friends that Clayton would be stepping down as Vice President.
Minutes: Roland stated that the minutes of the October 2009 meeting were distributed by email. Motion to accept minutes. (M. Carlow / F. Gralenski) All in favor.
Treasurers Report: Marcia Carlow provided the friends with an up to date report. Statement as of October 31, 2009 shows… Bangor Savings account $3,292.01, CD $4,617.37, savings account $3,962.79 for a total of $11,872.17……….. ( Pay Pal account Approx. $89.20)
Birding Festival: Kara McCrimmon gave the group an up date of the follow up meeting for the 2009 festival. The festival showed a profit of $3,200. $700 of which will be used in advertising and the balance will be used to a person to take care of the details for the 2010 festival. Kara will still be director. Some points of interest to the group were that the Elderhostel program has its own billing formula that it charges participants. FOMR participation could be useful in advisory capacity and, staffing the welcome center. Bill K. stated the refuge was in favor of continuing being involved and would explore a challenge grant for possible expanded refuge events. The grant to be focused on children activities aside from serious birding. An itinerary of sort should be provided Cobscook Bay Learning Center by mid December. This being most important if FOMR is to be listed in printed material. It was communicated that FORM and the refuge be noted in all print material when space allows.
Newsletter: The DVD should be the focus in Timberdoodle Times. It should come out before the Christmas holiday to provide a marketing opportunity for the refuge DVD. Any member who has an article or information should send it to Emily Martin cemartin9@roadrunner.com Information should be submitted ASAP.
Membership: Roland volunteered to put together a current list of members and get the January 2010 billing done.

Andy worked with a Calais provider to see if the style FOMR desires was available. The finished hats were not the desired style so Andy will talk with the provider business to work out a mutual agreement. Kara McCrimmon turned in $6 for a pin sale and the inventory of hats and pins that CBLC had.

Video: Minor changes have been completed. It is finished. Gerry stated that the FOMR could expect delivery by mid-November. The snow sled section was edited out and a disclaimer was added. Andy and Fred Hartman will act as marketing committee. A motion was made and carried that the DVD should retail for $15.00 plus sales tax and postage where applicable. (LaVallee / Hartman) All in favor.

Trails: Bill K. reported the trails are still open.
REFUGE REPORT: Bill K. reported that the Calais LNG is working on a plan to run a gas pipeline under the Magaurawock Marsh.
The Refuge aquried 165 Acres at the end of the Hardscrabble Road in Calais.
To avoid loosing funding, fishing derby money of $1,600 is transferring to the FOMR account to be spent when the time comes for the event.
The same is planned for $2,800. This will be used for expenses accrued by Marion Bates in the bird count program.
Funding is available for the refuge to build a new office building. This building might provide an opportunity to partner with the state to house a state visitor center on the west side of the new bridge before Calais. Other locations are also being considered. FOMR should have a retail / welcome center area in the building. The design has been approved but many details are yet to be considered. FOMR members are encouraged to email Bill K. with ideas.

Friends of Moosehorn December 2, 2009 Meeting Minutes

Call to order: FOMR President Andy Slater 6:10 p.m.
Minutes: Roland stated that the minutes of the November 3, 2009 meeting were distributed by email twice. No discrepancies were noted. Andy stated he liked getting a copy of the minutes by email with the agenda.
Treasurers Report: Marcia Carlow provided the friends with an up to date report. Statement as of November 30, 2009 shows… Bangor Savings account $2,743.23, CD $4,630.88, savings account $3,961.73 for a total of $11,335.84……….. ( Pay Pal account Approx. $98.20)
Birding Festival: Roland inquired about children activities aside from serious birding. An itinerary of sort has to be provided Cobscook Bay Learning Center by mid December. This being most important if FOMR is to be listed in printed material. Ray informed the group that Bill K. was to attend a birding festival meeting on Dec.3rd.

The provider sold us the 100 hats for cost then we reordered 100 in the style we wanted originally.
Events: It was noted our next event is the Winter Fest. Jan.23 at the YCC building, next are the amphibian walk and talk in April (not confirmed yet), the warbler walk in May, and the spring birding festival in May.

Trails: No report.
Grants: Andy reported Fred Hartman is working with Bangor Savings Bank to get a grant application in for the 2010 grant opportunities.
New Business: Jeff Lyons reported an illegal dumpsite that he thought was on refuge property in the Edmunds unit. Ray B. said that the refuge staff would determine if it was the refuge’s responsibility to clean it up.
REFUGE REPORT:
Ray B. reported that the Calais LNG and Bill K. met in the refuge system regional office to discuss the proposed access of the pipeline through the refuge.
The 2 biotechs on staff will be kept on for the winter.
Andy Weik the refuge biologist will be taking a new job in New York State.
Funding is available for the refuge to build a new office building in 2010.
