2008 Meeting Minutes:

Friends of Moosehorn NWR Board Meeting
Feb. 20, 2008

In attendance: President Fred Hartman, Fred G., Clayton R., Bonny S., Andy
S, Marcia C., Vicki. F., Project Manager Bill K., Asst. Deputy Ray B.
Guests: Scott Fraser, Gerry Krausse and Emily Martin.

Corrections to 1/9/08 minutes: MTA Annual meeting is in Boothbay Harbor,
Maine. Not Bangor. Lecture at upcoming Birding festival is Oceanic birds.
Fred G. motioned the minutes be accepted, Bonny made the second, all in
favor.

Scott Fraser, Outdoor Rec. and Adventure tourism Instructor at WCCC spoke to
the Board about the upcoming Winter Weekend event. He explained the hoped
for funding was not received but he was pursuing a scaled down 1 day event
for Saturday, March 1. It will be billed and promoted as Family Winter Fun
Day. Scott, his wife and his Outdoor Recreation students will assist
attendees with instructions and leading cross country groups. Clayton
offered to get the trailgroomer from the Sunrise Snowmobilers in order to
break up the icy conditions on the trails. Scott has already secured the
equipment with St. Croix Healthy Communities. Friends can help with
providing lunch at the YCC building and with promotion of the event. Vicki
will assist emailing the event flyer to local FOMR members.

Treasurer’s Report: Marcia gave an oral report; we have $10,000.00
altogether.

Blueberry Festival: Fred had applications from the Congregational Church and
the Machias Chamber. Both booth rentals prices are $100.00 the church frowns
on participants renting a space but using it only on Saturday, they prefer 2
day participants.
After a brief discussion we decided to apply for a space with the Chamber of
Commerce.
Fred will mail the check and application in immediately.

Bangor Saving Band Grant: Fred had spoken with the BSB Director of Community
Relations Officer, Carol Colson, to ask that FOMR’s name be put on the next
Communities Matter More ballot, she agreed to follow through with it and
also suggested we apply for a Corporate Sponsorship. Fred will resubmit the
original grant he had written.

Birding Festival: Walks at the Moosehorn NWR will be open to the public at
no charge. FOM is charged with helping w/ registrations YCC building and
leading walks. We can display a table with our literature/items to sell. A
question was put to us: We are playing a more active role at the Refuge and
with the festival this year - would we be “sharing” the proceeds of sales
on our items with the Birdfest Committee. Fred G. motioned to keep all funds
of FOMR items. Marcia made the 2nd. All were in favor. Bill informed us the
Aroostook Friends have many items and they might work a deal with us if we
displayed their items as well. Marcia made a motion to let Bill handle the
Aroostook Friends merchandise. Clayton made the 2nd all were in favor. Fred
G. asked about Downeast Drawings items, should he offer a share of proceeds
to our group or to the festival. Vicki suggested he offer it to the Birding
Festival.

Correspondence: Stacy LaBare asked for logistics assistance with the
‘American Hiking Society Working Vacation’ group that will be at the refuge
Sept. 21 through Sept. 27th. Rides may need to be coordinated, etc. Brief
discussion. Consensus: we will coordinate to help.

Website: Tabled. Bring ideas and comments to next meeting.

Newsletter: Emily Martin shared rough drafts of the spring issue of the
newsletter and asked for comments or suggestions. We nixed the idea of
including the entire Birding festival schedule inside the newsletter as we
were already up to 8 pages (4 sheets) There were a few minor corrections. We
discussed how many to print. A suggestion of 300 to start, we can order more
if needed. Emily was thanked for her efforts.

Refuge Manager’s Report: Bill Kolodnicki started by thanking the Friends
group for their continued support. He explained how much influence Friends
groups provide in writing/contacting Congressmen & representatives in
support of the National Wildlife Refuges and all the projects Friends take
on in support of their Refuges. Other Moosehorn Refuge items the staff is
concerned with: Andy Weik’s work with UMaine students is going well. All the
Refuge staff is working feverishly on the CCPlan, the deadline looms large.
Bill is keeping tabs on the Gas Pipeline meetings. Personnel will monitor
the noise as the 3rd Bridge work progresses closer to Maguerrewock.
Assistant Deputy. Ray is working on the advertising for summer staff and
programs.
Gerry Krausse: Gerry is the person FOMR entered into a contract with over 2
years ago to produce a video about the Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge.
Gerry hails from Rhode Island. The group has been concerned with the
progress of the project. Gerry gave us a draft handout. Gerry also gave an
accounting of what he has done thus far. He said the rough cut without voice
over will be done by mid-year. He verbally asserted his commitment to
finishing the project possibly by September. He explained some obstacles he
has encountered. Overall, he is pleased with what he has captured on film.
He listed the animals or activities he has at the top of his list to yet
film. He also wants to interview Marcia, Bill Kolodnicki, and Andy Weik.
This will involve at least two more visits to the Moosehorn Refuge. He
asked us to review the written draft and get back to him by writing or
emailing and comments, criticisms or suggestions.
We thanked him for attending and giving us a detailed update.

Moosehorn staff retiree, Bill Jones, did not attend our meeting so Fred will
deliver the gift he had purchased on our behalf.

One related item came up for discussion: Giving the President of the Friends
the right to purchase items on behalf of the club for unforeseen events such
as retiree gifts or needed stationery/supplies. Vicki motioned the President
of the Board be allowed to purchase up to $100 without prior Board approval.
Clayton made the 2nd all were in favor.

Meeting adjourned at 8:15 p.m.
