Boy Scout  News 22 Sept 08

The big news for Troop 136 was our International Camporee at Moosehorn, Sept 19 -21.  We had a total attendance of over   182 with 24 Boy Scout troops from Maine, 4 units from New Brunswick, CA, and 3 Cub Scout Packs. For Saturday activities we had:
  1. Andy Weik from Moosehorn demonstrating the banding of ducks and telling about the information recorded and obtained in the process.
  2. The Little Drummers from Pleasant Point
  3. The Firemen from Calais and Charlotte demonstrating muster and awarding prizes for participation.
  4. Deputy Sheriff Tom Chambers and his dog Liberty, an exuberant 2 year old Black Lab.  Liberty, trained by Tom, demonstrated great ability in finding drugs hidden not only in a bunch of backpacks but also discarded in an overgrown field.
  5. Skip McGarvey had an archery range set up and many at the Camporee participated.
  6. Chris Bernier ran a tomahawk throwing contest
  7. Charlie Sawyer brought one of his big telescopes and we had a chance to look into deep space in the clear cold Saturday night.
  8. We had a service project for Moosehorn, where we worked on one of the handicap accessible trails that join the Woodcock trail
  9. We had an Adult Cooking Contest
  10. We had a Youth Cooking Contest
The big competition was the Night Hawk competition.  This is a popular Canadian idea. We had 11 stations in a 1 ½ mile loop trail consisting of parts of the Charlotte Trail and the Woodcock Trail.  Each of these stations required the competing troops to demonstrate ability in a scouting skill.  These were:
  1.  Toxic waste handling
  2. Knife sharpening
  3. Compass use
  4. Plant Identification
  5. Setting up a tent in the dark
  6. General Scout knowledge
  7. First Aid
  8. Knot tying
  9. Lashing
  10. Camp Etiquette
  11. Campfire Starting
We also had a hot chocolate station after station 7.  The scoring was done to emphasize not only competence in the task but also courtesy, cooperation, spirit, attitude and interest.  Manning the stations were scout leaders and members of our Troop 136.

The results of the various competitions were:
Adult Cooking: 1st Ketepec  from St. John, New Brunswick
Youth Cooking: Troop 136 from Dennysville
Fireman’s Muster: Pack 136 from Dennysville
NightHawk:  1st Ketepec from St. John, New Brunswick

Our thanks to the following:

1.  Moosehorn for the use of the grounds and the facilities
2. Preston’s  for a break on the many Portapotties necessary in this type of project

3. Chris Sherrard for the use of a Dumpster
